Emigration Clearance is a mandatory requirement for certain Indian passport holders traveling to specific countries for employment. This process, also known as Emigration Check Required (ECR), is in place to protect the interests of Indian workers abroad. If your passport has the "Emigration Check Required" stamp, you need to get clearance before you can travel. All Indian travelers going to a GCC country who require this check must complete this process.
We have extensive experience in handling emigration clearance applications and are well-versed in the requirements. Our goal is to make this process as simple and stress-free as possible for you. We provide reliable and efficient service to help you get your emigration clearance quickly so you can focus on your journey ahead.
Q1. What is the difference between an ECR and ECNR passport?
A. ECR (Emigration Check Required) is a status for Indian passport holders who have not passed the 10th grade. This status requires them to get official emigration clearance before traveling to certain countries for employment. ECNR (Emigration Check Not Required) is for those who have passed the 10th grade or meet other criteria. ECNR passport holders do not require this clearance for employment in any country.
Q2. How do I know if my passport is ECR or ECNR? A. All passports issued to those who have passed the 10th grade are ECNR by default. If your passport was issued before January 2007 and has a blank page 2, it is ECNR. If your passport was issued after January 2007 and has no ECR stamp, it is also ECNR. For new passports, the "Emigration Check Required" status is printed on the last page. If it is not there, your passport is ECNR.
Q3. Which countries require Emigration Clearance? A. Emigration clearance is required only for 17 countries namely Afganistan, Bahrain, Iraq, Indonesia, Kingdom of saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan, Libiya, Lebanon, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Sudan, Syria, Thailand, UAE and Yemen.
Q4. What happens if I travel without the required Emigration Clearance? A. If your passport has the ECR stamp and you are traveling to a designated ECR country for employment without a valid clearance, you will likely be stopped at the immigration counter at the airport and not allowed to board your flight. This can lead to significant travel delays and financial loss.
Q5. Is Emigration Clearance required for a tourist or student visa? A. No, Emigration Clearance is only required for employment-related travel. If you have an ECR passport but are traveling on a tourist, student, or family visit visa, you do not need to get clearance.
Q6. Can I get my ECR status changed to ECNR? A. Yes, you can. If you later meet the ECNR eligibility criteria (e.g., passing the 10th grade), you can apply for a passport reissue to have the ECR stamp removed and get a new ECNR passport.
